Ways To Participate

Do a Little...
Washington Women's Foundation members commit to making an annual contribution and to voting on the distribution of the pooled funds. There are no other obligations.

Do a Lot...
JOIN A COMMITTEE
Each of the committees listed below would welcome members' time and talents. All members are eligible to participate. Committees include:
Education Committee: Plans educational programs that address current issues and strategies in philanthropy. Committee members also devote meeting time to their own philanthropy education.
Grant Committee: Researches and nominates the candidates for the pooled fund ballot. Meets from January through May each year.
Impact Assessment Committee: Reviews pooled fund awardees and assesses the impact of the grant on the community. Participation is limited to members who have served two years on the Grant Committee.
Membership Committee: Builds and stewards a vital, diverse and satisfied membership – one in which members feel connected to one another and the community.

ATTEND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Members are invited to programs and events scheduled throughout the year, including educational forums and miniforums, neighborhood gatherings, Grant Committee report meetings, the annual meeting, and an annual award event to announce pooled fund beneficiaries. Members are encouraged to invite guests to events and programs. WWF sends members a monthly newsletter (alternating between paper and electronic versions) that includes information about upcoming WWF events. In addition, a regularly updated calendar of WWF programs is available our our Programs page.

Grant Committee Programs
DISCOVERY DAYS: discover your passion! (November)
WWF invites community experts representing each area funded by the foundation – arts & culture, education, environment, health and social services – to give us their perspective on where a WWF pooled fund award or individual grant would make the greatest impact. Discovery Days offers a great opportunity for all WWF members and their guests to learn about cutting-edge issues in our community.
GRANT CYCLE : the heart of WWF (January - June)
All WWF members are invited to participate in the grant process. (To learn more about the grant cycle, please visit Grants) The kick-off meeting is held each January.
GRANT REPORT MEETINGS: inform your vote and your own philanthropy (April - May)
The Grant Committee makes reports on the projects/organizations being considered for WWF pooled fund awards at two meetings. All members are encouraged to attend. The first grant report meeting is a summary of the 25 projects (five in each of WWF’s funding areas) under consideration in the current grant cycle. The second report meeting summarizes the outcome of the 15 site visits (three in funding area) made by the Grant Committee.
AWARD CELEBRATION: an annual highlight (June)
After the Grant Committee completes its work and the entire membership has voted on the final five organizations that will receive pooled fund awards, it is time to celebrate! At this celebration the five pooled fund awardees are announced and the organizations are present to accept their checks as well as our congratulations.

Programs Hosted by Other Committees
ANNUAL MEETING (January/February)
The annual meeting is an opportunity to hear from WWF leadership about the foundation activities of the past year and plans for the future. In addition to the regular business portion of the meeting (election of directors, reports from the chair and president) the program typically includes guest speakers and reports from past grantees. Hosted by the WWF board of directors.
EDUCATION FORUMS & MINIFORUMS: knowledge and skills for effective philanthropy (Spring & Fall)
The Education Committee hosts several educational opportunities each year designed to build members skills and knowledge for effective philanthropy. Forums often include a panel of speakers and draw medium to large groups of members and their guests. Two forums are held each year, one focusing on an issue and the other on skill-building. Past topics include the foster care system, board governance and childhood obesity. Miniforums offer a more informal, intimate setting to learn about an issue. Several miniforums are held each year, often hosted in a member’s home. This is an opportunity to connect with the nonprofit community, local leaders and other WWF members.
NEIGHBORHOOD GATHERINGS: the story of philanthropy (Spring & Fall)
Designed to stimulate members' thinking about their own giving, neighborhood gatherings offer a unique opportunity to hear a personal story of philanthropy. Hosted by the Membership Committee, these gatherings are a great opportunity to get to know other members.
